Sunday July 27, 2008

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I announce the death of my father,

Philip J. Liston

He left us from his home on Sunday morning July 27, 2008 at 6:56am.

Phil is survived by his dear wife Pat, and his five wonderful children:

Pegeen, Tim, Chris, Shawn, Colin,

and his nine grandchild:

Trevor, Toby, Lauren, Katie, Connor, Delaney, Rhys, Alish, Finn.

My father is a wonderful and caring gentle soul, he was our Lion, and he will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Democratic National Committee

oh colin...
It was a glorious sunrise this morning as I drove to my mom's house, with the sun just as big and red and pretty as could be. He wanted to be home and he was, he wanted his children around him and he got that and he wanted not to linger and he was granted that as well. As I walked on the beach this morning all these McMansions had their blinds and shades down because the sun was so bright this morning and so they missed the dawn...I think dad would have thought that odd and funny...because why else would you live on the beach if not to experience those glorious sunrises?

Colin,

My heart goes out to your family. You know I held your father in high regard and so enjoyed my conversations with him. I always look forward to him answering the phone instead of you because he was genuinely interested in other people's lives and how they were doing - an unusual thing these days. I admit that this kind of came out of nowhere for me, so I'm pretty stunned right now.

Thank you all for your kind words.

My dad was a great guy, and I as well as the few people who do read this silly blog, would love to hear any and all stories about Phil.

Sincerely,
LI

Colin,

Again, I regret that I wasn't able to attend Phil's service. So, in lieu of that, not so much a story but this:

What I remember most about Phil was his natural curiosity about everything around him and whoever he happened to be in the company of. If it was me, it was "how is your new job? What the hell is XXXX anyway" Or, the home engineering methods that you and him employed for stuff around his house and ultimately, the Listonian Institute.

Or, running up his bill at Selva Marina with a reuben, onion rings and a bowl of chili on Sunday afternoon to meet his monthly minimum.

Or, wondering how he had as much patience as he did with his knuckleheaded offspring?

Or, listening to your mom tell the story of their first date (NYC?)where he ended up passed out drunk a little too early in the evening.

Or, the Sterling.

Or, realizing he was the smart guy that built one of the first houses on the low side of PVB by the crossroads. He also built the the most modest house because he didn't need a McMansion to show how big his ..... was.

Or, listening to the stories Katy told about what it was like to be in the presence of him and Frank at the same time. Phil was always devising something around the house that was a different way of doing thing. I guess that rubs off on you, right?

Anyway, I'm spending the day recognizing the man up here as best I can. I'll go home and do some quack job engineering project with Charles in his honor tonite.

Give your family our best,

Mark
